“For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.” 1 Tim 2:5-6 (NASB)
Jesus Christ is the one and only mediator between God and men. That’s what this biblical text says. It couldn’t be any clearer. However, not everyone would agree with that truth. In fact, those words infuriate a number of people. In a culture like ours that exalts tolerance as its highest virtue it is hard to believe there may only be one way to God. To be tolerant in today’s culture you must believe there are many other ways to God or else you are labeled a “bigot” and “arrogant.”
Many people would like to believe that God grades on a sliding scale. In other words, He grades on a curve. As long as there is somebody who has done worse than you, then you’ve got a chance to get a good grade with God. It simply boils down to effort, sincerity, good deeds, and discipline. And then there’s the “compassion factor.” It’s often said, “Surely God won’t judge a person for a few mistakes. Didn’t you say He loves everyone?”
These same people claim that Jesus was a very good, moral, and religious teacher and that Christians today are distorting the truth that He taught. Perhaps they would be shocked to hear that He said to His disciples,
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” John 14:6 (NASB)
Now, why would Jesus say such a thing? The reason Jesus is the only way to God is because He met the conditions and requirements of God’s Divine Justice.
Perfect justice requires that sin be dealt with by death. Perfect justice would not be perfect if it allowed for any injustice. So, Jesus was born of a virgin in order that He would not inherit man’s sin nature. He lived a sinless life and ultimately offered His life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. Because He did not have to die for His own sin, He was able to voluntarily die for ours. He “gave Himself as a ransom for all.”
“Fishers of men” have an inclusive message for the world. Jesus died for the world. He is the ONLY WAY but also THE WAY for anyone who wants to experience forgiveness and reconciliation.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” John 3:16-17 (NASB)
