“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes! But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will go down to Hades!” Luke 10:13-15
“All I’m asking for is one miracle. If I can see just one miracle I’ll believe.”
The Apostle Thomas said, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe!” (John 20:25)
Our hearts are so hard. Sin has distorted our ability to see things as they really are. We are so quick to elevate ourselves to the level of God and actually believe we can negotiate a deal with Him. As mere men and women, we actually think we know better than a God who is Omniscient and All-Knowing. How dare we make such requests and place such demands upon the God of this Universe. Like we’re in a position to negotiate?!
Why would you want to negotiate? He’s already willing to give you the farm. His love for you is unconditional. He has already satisfied the demands for a perfect justice by sending His Son to die as a perfect sacrifice for your sin. At this very moment, He offers reconciliation, eternal life, and forgiveness of sin as a gift to be received by faith. What more could you want?
You really don’t need a miracle or another sign to believe the truth. That’s just a delaying tactic. You don’t want to believe the truth because it would mean admitting that you are a sinner with absolutely no chips to bargain with. You’d have to depend on the mercy of God. You’d have to change.
God knows exactly what you need to see or hear in order to believe. And that’s what He will do…because He loves you. But you and I are always looking to negotiate for more. Be careful! If you keep on delaying your decision to believe with other conditions, Jesus may finally have to say about you what He said about Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum.
Attention “fishers of men!” Your calling from God is to pass on the gospel message to those who have not yet heard. You cannot do anything to twist their arm and make them believe. If miracles from God are not enough, why would you thing you could do better? So don’t be discouraged when people reject your message. Keep on sharing it. Some are ready for it and will believe.
