And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” Isaiah 6:8 ESV
How spiritually mature do you need to be before you are ready to “fish for men?” What kind of personality do you need to have to adequately represent God as a spokesperson? How much do you need to know before you’re ready to share the Gospel with someone?
The important element of this invitation in Isaiah 6:8 is that it was “heard” by Isaiah, not necessarily personalized for him. Isaiah didn’t respond with a conditional “I’ll go” because he knew the call had nothing to do with his abilities or personality. He had simply gotten close enough to the Lord to finally hear the invitation. God wasn’t thinking of Isaiah’s temperament, giftedness, speaking ability, or Meyers-Briggs test results when He asked, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” God is looking for people who are willing and available rather than passionate and able.
When Jesus said He was calling all His followers to become “fishers of men” that meant they were now close enough to hear the invitation to join Him. They did not try to change the calling. They were just excited about the opportunity to follow Him. And if that meant “fishing for men,” then so be it.
Have you personally considered the Biblical truth that followers of Christ are “fishers of men?” When was the last time you did some fishing? It’s not about how ready you are to fish. It’s about whether you have chosen to follow Him. If you’re going to claim to be a follower then carry your fishing gear with you….TODAY.
